Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 is a DNS service, while WARP is Cloudflare’s client that routes your traffic through Cloudflare. On Windows, you can use them together so your DNS queries go to 1.1.1.1 (and, when WARP is enabled, your traffic benefits from WARP’s routing).
This guide shows how to install WARP on Windows, set DNS to 1.1.1.1, and then prove it’s working with real checks (not guesswork). It also covers what to do when connections fail or DNS appears to “not change.”

What 1.1.1.1 and WARP do on Windows
1.1.1.1 (and its sibling 1.0.0.1) are public DNS resolvers operated by Cloudflare. They handle name lookups like turning example.com into an IP address.

WARP (now typically distributed as the Cloudflare WARP client) is designed to route device traffic through Cloudflare. Depending on settings, this can also influence how DNS is resolved and secured.

Prerequisites and what you should verify first
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit). Older 32-bit systems won’t have modern support.
- Admin rights for installation and service configuration.
- Working internet connection to download the client.
- Basic DNS expectations: if you’re on a corporate network, your IT team may enforce DNS via Group Policy, DHCP, or a local resolver.
If you’re using a VPN, be ready for conflicts. Many VPN/proxy clients replace system DNS settings or install network drivers that can interfere with WARP’s behavior.
Install Cloudflare WARP on Windows
Cloudflare WARP is available as a Windows desktop app. The exact UI labels can vary slightly by version, but the core steps remain consistent.
- Go to the Cloudflare WARP download page and download the Windows installer (commonly named something like CloudflareWARPInstaller.exe).
- Double-click the installer and choose Yes when Windows prompts for permission.
- Follow the prompts to complete installation.
- Launch WARP after installation. Sign in if the app prompts you (some setups require an account to enable certain modes).
- When the main WARP window opens, locate the main toggle (often labeled ON/OFF).
If the installer fails, check Windows updates and restart your PC. Network-related install failures are often caused by blocked download domains or missing TLS support in heavily locked-down systems.

There are two common “paths” to using 1.1.1.1 DNS with WARP on Windows:
- Use WARP’s built-in DNS behavior (it may set DNS automatically when WARP is enabled).
- Manually set Windows DNS to 1.1.1.1 and then enable WARP to route traffic.
Try the built-in option first, then fall back to manual DNS if you have to.
Option A: Enable WARP and let it manage DNS (recommended start)
Open WARP and enable it. Then check the app’s settings for DNS-related controls. Depending on the build, you may see items like “DNS” or “Secure DNS” inside settings.
- In WARP, open Settings (often a gear icon).
- Look for a section labeled DNS, Secure DNS, or similar.
- If you see a choice of DNS provider/servers, select 1.1.1.1 or Automatic (wording varies).
- Save/apply changes.
- Toggle WARP ON again if needed to apply DNS settings.
Option B: Manually set Windows DNS servers to 1.1.1.1
If WARP doesn’t expose DNS server selection (or your Windows DNS keeps getting overwritten), set DNS at the OS level. This forces Windows to query Cloudflare’s resolvers at 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.

- Kip S. Thorne, Black Holes & Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy, paperback
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet → Wi‑Fi or Ethernet (based on your connection).
- Click your active network (for example, Wi‑Fi Network or Ethernet).
- Under IP assignment, select Edit.
- Change IP assignment to Manual, if required.
- Turn IPv4 On.
- Set Preferred DNS to 1.1.1.1.
- Set Alternate DNS to 1.0.0.1.
- Click Save.
- Disable and re-enable the network adapter (or restart) to apply cleanly.
Why both? DNS redundancy matters. If one resolver is unreachable, the alternate can keep lookups working.
Confirm the DNS protocol: UDP/DoH/DoT details
Windows DNS settings typically use classic DNS (UDP/TCP). WARP may provide “secure DNS” behavior depending on its configuration and network path. Either way, you’ll confirm with tests in the next section.
If you rely on DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT) specifically, note that OS-level DNS server selection doesn’t always guarantee the transport. Verification is how you avoid surprises.
Verify 1.1.1.1 is actually in use
Verification is where most “it should be working” setups fail. Use at least one of the checks below.

Method 1: Check DNS resolver IPs from the command line
Run these commands to see what DNS server your Windows network adapter is using.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator (Start menu → type cmd → right-click → Run as administrator).
- Run:
ipconfig /all
Find your active adapter and look for DNS Servers. You should see 1.1.1.1 and possibly 1.0.0.1.
If you don’t, Windows or a security tool may be rewriting DNS after WARP starts.

Method 2: Validate DNS through a resolver test
Open a browser and visit a DNS test page designed to show which resolver is answering. Cloudflare has multiple public endpoints historically used for testing; if one doesn’t show the expected details, try a different reputable DNS diagnostic.
For a strong signal, test the same website twice: once with WARP OFF and once with WARP ON. DNS behavior should align with your configuration.
Method 3: Capture traffic (advanced but definitive)
If you need a hard confirmation, use a packet capture tool (Wireshark) and look for DNS traffic to 1.1.1.1. You can filter by dns and confirm the destination IP.
This is the best option when troubleshooting corporate networks or aggressive endpoint security tools.
Advanced options (split tunneling, firewall, proxy conflicts)
WARP setups often fail because something else is already controlling networking.

If your WARP client supports “split tunneling” (routing only certain apps through WARP), verify that your browser or target application is included. Otherwise, your traffic may bypass WARP even if DNS is set.
- Open WARP Settings.
- Find Split tunneling or App routing.
- Add the specific executable for your browser (for example,
msedge.exeorchrome.exe), or ensure “route all traffic” is enabled.
Windows Firewall and security software
WARP installs background services and needs outbound access. If a firewall blocks it, you’ll see connect failures even though DNS still works.

Proxy settings that can override DNS
If you use a proxy (browser-level or system-level), DNS resolution might happen through the proxy rather than Windows DNS. In that case, your 1.1.1.1 settings may not affect what you think they should.
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy.
- Disable “Use a proxy server” temporarily for testing.
- Restart the browser and retest DNS behavior.
Troubleshooting when WARP won’t connect
When WARP fails, separate the problem into: (1) DNS, (2) reachability to Cloudflare, and (3) the WARP client itself.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →1) WARP toggle is ON but internet doesn’t work
- Restart the WARP service inside the app (if there’s a “Restart WARP” option).
- Restart your PC to clear stale network routes.
- Disable and re-enable the network adapter.
2) DNS shows 1.1.1.1, but websites still fail
That usually means name resolution works but routing doesn’t. Try:
- Test plain IP connectivity (open a site you know by IP, or ping an IP). If IP works but domains fail, it’s DNS transport or proxy involvement.
- Turn WARP OFF and confirm normal browsing works. If it works without WARP, focus on WARP networking/permissions.
- Check for split tunneling exclusions for your browser.
3) Corporate/managed networks override your DNS
Group Policy or endpoint management can force DNS settings back to internal resolvers. Symptom: ipconfig shows different DNS servers after you change them.
- Run
ipconfig /allbefore and after enabling WARP. - If a management agent restores DNS, you may need your IT team to permit 1.1.1.1 or allow WARP-managed DNS.
- As a workaround, you can still use WARP for traffic routing, but DNS may remain on internal resolvers.
4) Try a clean network reset
On Windows, you can reset the network stack. This is disruptive, but useful for stubborn issues.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Run:
netsh winsock reset
Then run:
netsh int ip reset
Reboot afterward.
5) Collect logs for support
If WARP still doesn’t connect, collect the app diagnostics (WARP typically includes a support/logs option in Settings). When reporting issues, include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Windows version (10/11 and build number)
- Whether WARP is in ON/OFF state during the test
- ipconfig /all output for DNS Servers
- Any error messages shown in the WARP UI
Performance and privacy considerations
Using 1.1.1.1 generally reduces lookup latency and standardizes resolver behavior. WARP’s routing can add overhead depending on your region and network conditions, but it’s designed to keep latency predictable.
Best Value
Privacy-wise, DNS and traffic patterns can still reveal metadata. If your goal is “minimum data exposure,” you should also review browser settings (tracking protection), OS-level telemetry, and whether you’re routing all apps or only selected ones.
Alternatives if you only want 1.1.1.1 DNS (without WARP)
If you only care about DNS performance and not traffic routing, you can skip WARP entirely and configure DNS in Windows.
- Windows DNS-only: set IPv4 preferred DNS to 1.1.1.1 and alternate to 1.0.0.1.
- Router-level DNS: set DNS servers on your router so all devices use 1.1.1.1.
- Browser/OS secure DNS apps: use a reputable DNS client that supports DoH/DoT (verify compatibility with Windows).
Choose DNS-only if you want minimal moving parts. Choose WARP when you want traffic routing through Cloudflare in addition to DNS improvements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes to avoid
- Changing DNS but leaving WARP routing off: You may see 1.1.1.1 in ipconfig but not get WARP’s traffic routing benefits.
- Assuming DNS tests prove WARP is working: DNS can succeed even when WARP can’t pass traffic.
- Using a proxy/VPN simultaneously: Proxy can hijack DNS resolution or bypass WARP.
- Forgetting to restart apps: Many apps cache DNS results. Restart your browser after DNS changes.
- Ignoring managed networks: Enterprise policies may revert your DNS settings repeatedly.
FAQs
Do I need to set Windows DNS to 1.1.1.1 if I’m using WARP?
Not always. Some WARP modes manage DNS automatically. However, setting Windows DNS to 1.1.1.1 is a reliable way to ensure DNS resolution uses Cloudflare resolvers when WARP doesn’t provide explicit DNS control.
Should I use IPv6 DNS too?
If you see IPv6 connectivity is enabled, consider setting IPv6 resolvers to match your DNS strategy. If your network breaks IPv6, leaving IPv6 misconfigured can cause intermittent failures. Verify with a DNS test and check ipconfig for IPv6 DNS entries.
Will WARP slow down my connection?
It can, especially if your traffic is routed to a farther Cloudflare edge. That said, many networks experience stability improvements. Test with WARP ON vs OFF using the same sites and time of day.
My DNS keeps reverting after I change it. What’s happening?
Common causes are DHCP options from your router, Group Policy in managed environments, or a third-party network tool. Run ipconfig /all after changes and identify what keeps rewriting DNS.
Can I use 1.1.1.1 with WARP but route only my browser through WARP?
Yes, if WARP supports split tunneling in your build. Add your browser executable to the allowed apps list and disable “route all traffic” if present.
Final Thoughts
For most Windows users, the most reliable approach is: install Cloudflare WARP, enable it, and confirm DNS behavior with ipconfig /all and a resolver test. If WARP doesn’t expose DNS control or your environment overwrites DNS, set Windows DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 manually.
Once you’ve verified both DNS and connectivity (WARP ON vs OFF), your 1.1.1.1 + WARP setup should be stable, explainable, and easy to troubleshoot if something changes.
